TEA 101
After water, people around the world rely on this beverage staple from ancient China. Throughout history, people have believed that tea aids the liver, destroys the typhoid germ, purifies the body and preserves mental equilibrium. In recent times, scientists have documented that many of the health benefits of tea reported through the ages are more than folk lore. Black, green, white & oolong teas all derive their leaves from the Camellia Sinensis plant, and research on tea has yielded profound results no matter which variety is used. All the teas from this magical plant provide a wealth of health benefits. Barbara Minton, Natural Health Editor
WHITE TEAS White teas are appreciated by tea connoisseurs for their unmatched subtlety & complexity. HEALTH BENEFITS: White tea is excellent for hydration of the body & skin thus naturally reducing the signs of aging. It also aids in detoxifying your body. A cup of white tea has about 1% of the caffeine in a cup of coffee. BREWING: NEVER use boiling water, bring kettle to steam 180F. Steep for 2-4 minutes.
GREEN TEAS They have long been praised for their health benefits, but they also taste great! A delicious, refreshing green iced tea is just perfect on a hot summer day. HEALTH BENEFITS: Green tea is very high in antioxidants that boost the immune system & may help reduce the risk of cancer, particularly lung, colon & skin cancers. Also, it’s good for the metabolism. BREWING: NEVER use boiling water, bring kettle to steam 180F. Steep for 1-2 minutes.
OOLONG TEAS They are full-bodied with a fragrant & fruity aroma. They are semi-fermented teas, so they have some of the same qualities as green & black teas. HEALTH BENEFITS: Known as the “diet tea” they can also fight against tooth decay, help prevent heart ailments & aid in the treatment of digestive disorders. They can promote longevity by stimulating bodily functions & by strengthening the immune system. Plus, they may help promote healthier & stronger bones. Oolong teas do have a slight amount of caffeine. BREWING: NEVER use boiling water, bring kettle to steam 180F. Steep for 1-2 minutes.
BLACK TEAS Loved because they are full-bodied & strong, they taste great alone or with milk sugar & make wonderful iced teas! Their caffeine makes them a good morning tea, but they still only contain about 1/3 of the caffeine found in coffee. HEALTH BENEFITS: Recent medical studies declare black tea as a potential heart tonic, cancer blocker, fat buster, immune stimulant, arthritis soother, virus fighter & cholesterol detoxifier. Not bad for a lowly shrub soaked in a little hot water! BREWING: Use BOILING water & steep for 3-4 minutes.
ROOIBOS TEAS Rooibos teas are herbal infusions made from a South African red bush & are sometimes called “red tea”. There are also Green/Rooibos teas that are just as delicious as the popular red teas. Perfect iced or hot! HEALTH BENEFITS: Naturally caffeine free, high in antioxidants & Vitamin C. They also help promote healthy skin & bones. BREWING: Use BOILING water & steep for 7-10 minutes.
HERBAL TEAS From the sweet to the spicy, our herbal teas offer something for everyone. Try them as wellness teas or simply a refreshing, relaxing combination of herbs & flowers. HEALTH BENEFITS: Herbal teas are rich in antioxidants & vitamins. Typically they are also caffeine free, so they can be enjoyed anytime. BREWING: Use BOILING water & steep for 7-10 minutes.
CHAI Chai is a centuries old tea that has been important in many cultures around the world. Made from a base of black tea, it’s traditionally sweetened with milk & honey & includes various spices (cardamom, cinnamon, clover, ginger, nutmeg & pepper) which add to its zesty taste & its health benefits as well. HEALTH BENEFITS: Not only does Chai offer the benefits that you get from the tea itself (whichever variety), but the spices themselves have been proven to ease sore throats, cold & flu symptoms, promote circulation & calm an upset stomach & ease indigestion. BREWING: Brew according to type of tea; White, Green, Oolong, Rooibos, Herbal or Black.
FRUIT TISANE Fruit teas (tisanes) are a healthy alternative to sugary drinks & diet sodas. They are caffeine free & don’t contain sweeteners. Delicious hot or cold & great for children! HEALTH BENEFITS: Fruit teas are loaded with vitamins & minerals from the fruits & flowers they’re made of. BREWING: Use BOILING water & steep for 5-7 minutes.
With this amazing research, it’s time to turn over a new leaf, and let’s drink to your health.
